Social media poses some serious hazards, but for writers, it’s practically a necessity. Post announcements and short stories and story previews on it, gain fans, and advertise your writing. #1: posting announcements, short stories, and previews.
All these things get readers sucked into buying your books. More sales=more money. Simple, really. #2: gain fans A website can only do so much. Gain other writer friends and fans to help critique your stories. #3: advertise. The simplest of the three. You need to advertise! It’s vital to survival as a reader. Post special discounts for followers, etcetera etcetera etcetera. Advertising is the most important thing in this list. #4: feedback You can only get feedback if you have dedicated readers, and what better place to find them but social media? Some crazy people are out there, folks. Find them, and appeal to them. They will be your best friends when it comes to selling books. #5: encouragement Not quite the opposite of feedback, but close. After all this stuff you need to fix, check out the people encouraging you. Find things they love, and exploit them. Find your fans’ weaknesses and use them against them. It sounds harsh, but it works. #6: publicity It gains you attention from publishers, agents, and editors interested in your work #7: anonymity You can stay safely undercover with a pen name. You don’t have to worry about people judging how you look unless you post pictures of yourself, which, as a writer, is not required. All you need is that wonderful name you have chosen for yourself #8: ease It’s incredibly easy to post on social media. So, so, so easy. It’s like magic. #9: preparation Social media will prepare you for the real world. People will be harsh. People will be mean. There will be rejection. But if you push through, there will be great rewards, just like in life. #10: exploration Explore other writers work. It’s a great way to improve your own.
